Mixed veggies in poppy seeds paste

This is a traditional recipe from eastern part of  India to where I belong. In this recipe the vegetables specially potatoes, okra etc. are simmered in the poppy seeds paste. Poppy seeds are dried seeds of the poppy plant. They are rich in carbohydrates and are considered good source of energy. Poppy seeds soaked in water can be ground along with lime juice to form a smooth paste. It has anti carcinogenic properties and is used to treat breast cancer. These seeds are also rich in omega-3- fatty acids. Poppy seeds help to fight insomnia as it induces sleep and  also acts as a mild relaxant

  • Ingredients
  • 1. Poppy seeds 1/2 cup soaked
  • 2. Green Chilly 1 or 2
  • 3. Nigella seeds Fennel seeds, Cumin seed, Fenugreek seeds ,Mustard seeds mixed together called 5 seasonings(a pinch)
  • 4. Beens broad beans and other green vegetables chopped
  • 5. Oil 1 tbsp.
  • 6. Salt as per taste
  • 7. Turmeric powder a pinch
  • 8. Sugar as per taste optional
  • 9. Chilli flakes optional


  1. Preparation
  2. 1.Soak poppy seeds in water for 30 minutes.
  3. 2.Grind with chilies and salt into a smooth white paste.
  4. 3.Add a tbsp. of oil to the wok. Add the pinch of 5 seasonings, add some chili flakes
  5. 4.Add the  veggies.
  6. 5.Add a pinch of turmeric powder.
  7. 6.Add little salt ,cover and cook in a low flame till the vegetables are soft but intact.
  8. 7.Add the poppy seed paste.
  9. 8.Check the salt content.
  10. 9.You can add a pinch of sugar if you like
  11. 10.Serve hot with rice or bread
