Crab xacuti masala

This is a popular Goan recipe prepared with seafood  and even chicken as a main ingredients. The dish is rich with coastal flavors and spicy with the fresh grounded roasted spices. The crab used here is soft shell crabs which have shells soft as egg shell are fleshy ,succulent ,sweet and juicy.

Ingredients

  • 5 to 8 crabs
  • 1 onion
  • 1/2 tomato
  • tamarind pulp dissolved in 1/4 cup of warm water
  • ginger garlic paste 2 tbsp
  • 1 cup fresh extracted coconut milk
  • 4 to 5 curry leaves
  • salt to taste

  • 8 to 10 black pepper
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp fennel seeds
  • 1 tsp poppy seeds
  • 1 tbsp Corriander Seeds
  • 1 inch cinnamon stick
  • 4 to 5 cloves
  • 3 to 4 green cardamom
  • 1/4th of a nutmeg
  • 1 Mace flower
  • 1 tsp of mustard seeds
  • 1 tbsp of fenugreek seeds

Instructions
1. Make a paste of onions
2. chop tomato
3. boil the crabs in 1 cup of water till they turn red ,or smear turmeric and salt and shallow fry in 1 tbsp of oil.
4.Heat 2 tbsp of oil on the pan
5.Fry onion paste followed by ginger garlic paste.
6.Fry tomatoes
7.Dry roast the ingredients of xacuti masala except coconut.
8.grind all the ingredients of xacuti masala into a fine paste.
9.Dry roast the coconut and make a paste as well.
10. add 2 tbsp of xacuti masla on the pan and fry
11.Add scraped coconut and saute.
12. Mix salt and add in the crabs.
13. Mix and cook for 15 minutes covered till the spices get absorbed by the crab nicely.
14.Add coconut milk and simmer for more 5 minutes.
15. Add the tamarind water and mix and allow the gravy to thicken.
16.Serve hot with steamed rice
