Ramadan is the holy month for Muslims worldwide marked by fasting ,prayers and community gatherings. Mohammed Ali road in Mumbai is known for its vibrant atmosphere and delicious street food.
There are numerous stalls and eateries offering a wide variety of authentic and modern dishes for iftar ( meal to break the fast). People from all parts of Mumbai flock to this area to experience this lovely festive atmosphere and experience mouthwatering delicacies.

What is Mohammed Ali Road Mumbai famous for?

Mohammed Ali Road is named after poet-journalist and leader of Khilafat Movement, scholar and activist Mohammed Ali Johar. The Khilafat Movement was started in 1919 by the Indian Muslim community to protest dismembering of the Ottoman Turkish Empire by Western powers after World War I.

Mohammed Ali road is famous for Mughlai and tandoori food to break Ramzan fast. The Khau gali is crowded with many street food vendors selling grilled meat, mouthwatering sweet treats and variety of snacks. Besides authentic food like Haleem, Mutton paya soup, Nalli nihari etc. nowadays we also get to see fusion food here like pizza in a kulhar(clay cups) , shawarma, various drinks and sherbets.

Meat dishes

Haleem

Haleem is a one pot meal made with pounded meat ,lentils and broken wheat cooked together with spices and then made a thick paste, popular in Hyderabad during Ramadan.

Pathhar ke gosht

Boneless mutton and chicken marinated with spices and fried on hot stone, generating smoky rustic flavors.

Malai tikka

Chicken marinated with cream, cashew paste and yoghurt grilled on direct flame or tandoor, white creamy melt into mouth texture

Pahari tikka

Boneless chicken pieces marinated in green paste made of coriander and mint leaves and green chilies, grilled over hot charcoal.

Sheekh kebab

Minced lamb meat marinated with indigenous spices wrapped around iron skewers and grilled over heat.

Rumali roti and galouti kebeb

Originally galouti kebabs are from Lucknow, which are made of lamb or beef meat ,with a melt into mouth texture, the meat is marinated with papaya paste which dissolves the fibers in the meat leading to a soft texture. They are moist and soft and can be eaten with thin soft rumali rotis.

Nalli Nihari

We had Nalli Nihari at Shalimar which is popular restaurant near Bhendi Bazaar. Traditionally it a stew which cooked with lamb meat with spices the whole night and served for morning breakfast. It also contains pieces of the bone marrow endowing a delectable mouthwatering taste.

Sweet treats

Sandan

Its a sweet rice cake made of rice and coconut milk which is steamed

Halwa poori

Gian sized fried flatbreads served with suji halwa topped with dried fruits.

Mawa puff

These are flaky colorful baked filo pastry sheets stuffed with sweetened evaporated milk and dried fruits.

Egg Malpua rabdi

Sweet egg based sweet flour batter deep fried in clarified butter. It is served with thickened cream and dried fruits.

Mawa jalebi

The batter is made of evaporated milk and start deep fried and drenched in sugar syrup
