Thekua is a traditional sweet snack and the main sacred food offering (prasad) during Chhath Puja which is an ancient four-day Vedic festival dedicated to the worship of the solar deity, Surya (the Sun God), and his sister, Chhathi Maiya . Devotees observe rigorous rituals, standing in water, and offering prayers (arghya) to both the setting and rising sun while fasting without water for 36 hours.
The festival also has agricultural significance, honoring the sun for a successful harvest

It is a significant Hindu festival, especially in the Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh.
To prepare this sweet , whole wheat flour is mixed with coconut, molten jaggery and roasted fennel seeds and cardamom POWDER .a dough is prepared and small patties are made which are pressed against a wooden mold. the patties or cookies are deep fried in clarified butter , I baked them though at 180 degrees preheated oven for 15 minutes and they are crispy fragrant and so good.

The story behind Chhath Puja involves several ancient legends, most notably that of Lord Rama and Sita, who are said to have performed the rituals upon returning to Ayodhya, and Karna, the son of the sun god Surya, who is also credited with starting the practice. The festival also has agricultural significance, honoring the sun for a successful harvest and has roots in ancient Vedic traditions.
