Makar Sankranti is a festival celebrated all over India by different names according to the Hindu Solar calendar. It marks the movement of Sun toward the Capricorn or Makar and hence the name Makar Sankranti. It marks the end of Winter solstice.

Black sesame seeds are of great health benefits are used widely in snacks and sweet dishes during the festivals. They provide warmth to the body during the winter season. This is a vegan recipe published for celebrating #veganuary event during January 2021.

Why do we eat til gud on Makar Sankranti?

Til or sesame seeds is rich in vitamins and minerals and provide essential warmth to the body during the Winter season. It is also considered auspicious and believed to remove negative energy. As per Hindu mythology , the God of Death Yama has blessed the black sesame seeds and are a symbol of immortality.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Black sesame seeds
  • 1/2 cup Jaggery melted
  • 1/4 cup Ground nuts

Instructions

  • Roast the black sesame seeds on a wok till aromatic
  • Roast the ground nuts separately
  • grind the sesame seeds with the nuts into a coarse powder
  • Melt jaggery in a pan
  • Add the ground seeds
  • Let it cool a bit
  • Wet your palms and make small balls out of them.
  • Store in a bottle outside or in refrigerator.
